August 6, 1985: Orioles (54-51) at Blue Jays (68-40)

Storm Davis pitched a complete game and Rick Dempsey hit one over the fence and had 3 RBI at EXHIBITION STADIUM where the Baltimore Orioles beat the Toronto Blue Jays 5 to 1. 

Toronto was unable to climb back into it after Baltimore went ahead for good in the top of the 3rd inning plating one baserunner on 3 hits. Baltimore rapped out 15 hits for the night. 

The winning pitcher was Davis(12-6) who allowed 1 run for the game. Jimmy Key(14-8) took the loss. He got hammered, allowing 13 hits and 2 walks in 7 innings.

August 5, 1985: Giants (46-60) at Astros (50-56)

Shortstop Dickie Thon had 4 hits and 3 RBI and Joe Niekro allowed Bob Lillis to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game at Colt Stadium where the Houston Astros beat the San Francisco Giants 10 to 2. 

Thon enjoyed a big evening at the plate. He lined a base-hit in the 1st inning, doubled in the 3rd inning, lined a single plating two runs in the 7th inning and lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' in the 8th inning. Houston had 14 hits for the night. 

The win went to Niekro(8-12) who allowed 2 runs in the game. Atlee Hammaker(12-6) was charged with the loss. The Houston ballclub's record now stands at 50-56. San Francisco has a record of 46-60 after the loss.

August 5, 1985: Padres (59-48) at Reds (57-48)

Eric Show had an impressive outing as the San Diego Padres defeated the Cincinnati Reds by a score of 2 to 1 at Crosley Field. 

In the top of the 3rd inning San Diego scored 2 runs. Tim Flannery led off and started the rally when he doubled. Tony Gwynn stepped up next and he drew a walk. Steve Garvey then doubled scoring two teammates. That early scoring held up. Cincinnati was retired without difficulty in the bottom of the 9th. 

The win went to Show(13-9) who allowed 1 run in the game. Tom Browning(10-9) was given the loss. He surrendered 4 hits and 4 walks in 8 innings. 

'Show pitched a gem of a game', Pete Rose recounted. 'He kept our batters off balance the entire game.'

August 5, 1985: Dodgers (64-42) at Braves (30-74)

Left fielder Pedro Guerrero blasted a homerun and had 3 RBI and Orel Hershiser went 9 solid innings at FULTON CTY STADIUM as the Los Angeles Dodgers, running on all cylinders, ripped the Atlanta Braves by a large 10 to 0 margin. 

Hershiser(12-8) was virtually untouchable. He didn't give up much, just 5 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings. Los Angeles banged out 14 hits on the night. 

Len Barker(4-13) was the loser. He gave up 1 hit and 1 walk in 3 innings.

August 5, 1985: Mariners (52-54) at Angels (48-57)

Mike Witt was able to finish what he started and was credited with a complete game at ANAHEIM STADIUM where the California Angels beat the Seattle Mariners by the score of 4 to 1. 

 California jumped on top to stay in the 2nd inning as they scored 2 runs on 1 base hits. That early run support was all that Witt(7-10) required. California banged out 8 hits on the night. 

 Jim Beattie(4-10) took the loss. He allowed 5 hits and 3 walks in 5 innings.




August 5, 1985: Phillies (43-61) at Cardinals (63-41)

Danny Cox had a complete game and Andy Van Slyke slammed a homerun and had 2 RBI as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 7 to 2 at BUSCH STADIUM. 

Philadelphia was unable to recover after St. Louis went ahead in the 3rd inning when they tallied 3 runs on 4 hits. That scoring would be all that was needed. St. Louis finished with 14 hits in the victory. 

Cox(6-8) finished the game allowing 2 runs in the victory. Charles Hudson(3-10) was the loser. He was not very effective, surrendering 6 runs in 5 and 2/3 innings. 

With this win, St. Louis has a 63-41 record. They have been 7-3 lately. With the loss Philadelphia now has a record of 43-61.

August 5, 1985: Twins (44-61) at A's (41-65)

Left fielder Mickey Hatcher had 3 base hits as the Minnesota Twins defeated the Oakland Athletics in 11 innings by the score of 4 to 3 at OAKLAND COLISEUM. 

Both teams were tied at 3 runs apiece after nine innings. Minnesota won the game in the 11th inning. Tim Teufel drew a walk. Greg Gagne stepped up to the plate and he stroked a single. Tim Laudner then hit a deep fly scoring the run. Minnesota had 11 hits for the night. 

Ken Schrom(8-2) got credit for the victory, pitching 1 and 1/3 innings and allowing no runs. Schrom got relief help from Ron Davis who gained credit for his 15th save. Jay Howell(1-4) was the loser in relief. He pitched 2 and 2/3 innings giving up 2 hits and 1 walk. 

Minnesota now has a record of 44-61. With this loss, Oakland has a 5-5 record of late, 41-65, worst in the division overall.

August 5, 1985: Expos (51-55) at Pirates (42-62)

In an entertaining game at Forbes Field the final score was the Montreal Expos 7, the Pittsburgh Pirates 4 in 11 innings. 

The score was tied at 4 after nine. Finally, Montreal pulled the game out in the 11th inning. Sal Butera led off and started the attack as he was hit by a pitch. After an out was recorded, Tim Raines came up and he ripped a base-hit. U.L. Washington then drew a walk to load the bases. Andre Dawson followed next and he laced a one-base hit knocking home two runners. Hubie Brooks came up to bat and reached on an error scoring the final run of the inning. For the game Montreal out-hit Pittsburgh 15 to 11. 

The winning pitcher was Jeff Reardon(5-1) who allowed 1 run in 2 innings. Bert Roberge recorded his 1st save. Rod Scurry(0-2) suffered the loss in relief. He was knocked around pretty good, giving up 3 runs in 2 innings.

August 5, 1985: White Sox (52-51) at Yankees (61-44)

The New York Yankees nipped the Chicago White Sox 3 to 2 at YANKEE STADIUM in a hard fought contest. 

Chicago lost it in the 8th inning when New York did all their damage with 3 runs on 3 base hits. Rickey Henderson opened up the inning nicely when he drew a walk. Dan Pasqua next to the plate and he stroked a base-hit. Don Mattingly then tripled plating two runs. Dave Winfield stepped in and he ripped a base-knock scoring the final run of the inning. Neither team was able to score until the 6th inning. 

The win was credited to Rich Bordi(7-0) who went 1 and 1/3 innings allowing 1 run. Dave Righetti recorded the save, his 24th. The loss was charged to Gene Nelson(10-12).

August 5, 1985: Mets (70-35) at Cubs (56-49)

At WRIGLEY FIELD the New York Mets easily handled the Chicago Cubs by the score of 6 to 2. 

Chicago was unable to recover after New York went ahead in the top of the 2nd inning plating one baserunner on 2 hits. New York had 15 hits for the game and Chicago had 6. 

Sid Fernandez(16-5) went 8 innings allowing 2 runs for the victory. Steve Trout(11-10) was tagged with the loss. He got hit pretty hard, allowing 11 hits and 3 walks in 6 innings.
