September 21, 1985: Reds (78-70) at Astros (72-76)

Craig Reynolds had 3 base hits and Mike Scott was on top of his game, blanking Cincinnati on just 4 hits as the Houston Astros defeated the Cincinnati Reds in 10 innings by a score of 1 to 0 at Colt Stadium. 

The score was knotted at zero after nine innings. Houston won the game in the 10th inning. Scott singled. Bill Doran came next and he slapped a single. Reynolds then delivered a single giving Houston the win and sending the home town fans into a frenzy. Houston totaled 10 hits on the afternoon. 

 For Scott(7-17) it was his 2nd shutout this year. Jay Tibbs(12-17) ended up with the loss. The Houston ballclub's record now stands at 72-76. Cincinnati has a record of 78-70 after the loss. 

September 21, 1985: Indians (54-96) at Angels (62-86)

Jack Howell slammed 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI and Mike Witt had a complete game as the California Angels bested the pathetic Cleveland Indians 3 to 1 at ANAHEIM STADIUM. 

It was a good day for California thanks to Howell. He laced a one-base hit in the 4th inning, cleared the fences for a two-run home run in the 6th inning and lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' in the 8th inning. The teams had been locked in a scoreless duel until the 6th inning. 

Witt(9-14) picked up the complete game victory, allowing 1 run. The losing pitcher was Tom Waddell(7-9). He gave up 2 runs and 6 hits in 6 and 2/3 innings.

September 21, 1985: Pirates (67-81) at Mets (94-54)

Sid Fernandez reeled off a total of 10 strikeouts and second baseman Wally Backman had 4 hits and 3 RBI as the New York Mets topped the Pittsburgh Pirates by a score of 13 to 5 at SHEA STADIUM. 

Fernandez(22-7) had a solid outing for New York. He allowed 7 hits and 4 walks in 7 and 2/3 innings. New York had 16 hits for the afternoon while Pittsburgh had 10. 

Larry McWilliams(6-13) was the loser. He got hit pretty hard, allowing 8 hits and 2 walks in 2 and 1/3 innings.

September 21, 1985: Brewers (67-81) at Blue Jays (95-53)

In a game at EXHIBITION STADIUM the sizzling Toronto Blue Jays got by the Milwaukee Brewers by the score of 12 to 9. 

Toronto had 6 runs cross the plate in the bottom of the 5th inning when they came up with 7 base hits. The biggest moment was provided by Buck Martinez who made the home-town crowd a happy bunch when he tripled with all three baserunners touching home. Milwaukee tried unsuccessfully to come back in the 9th.  The Blue Jays winning streak is at 12 games.

The win went to Dennis Lamp(6-6) who allowed 2 runs in 2 and 2/3 innings. Tom Henke recorded the save, his 35th. Ray Burris(14-16) was the losing pitcher. He was not very effective, surrendering 10 runs in 4 and 1/3 innings.

September 21, 1985: Cubs (75-74) at Phillies (65-83)

Juan Samuel had 4 hits and 5 RBI and John Denny retired 10 batters on strikeouts as the Chicago Cubs were badly beaten by the Philadelphia Phillies, 11 to 1. 

Samuel was in a groove all day. He stroked a single in the 3rd inning, cracked a solo homerun in the 5th inning, banged out a one-base hit knocking in a run in the 6th inning and tripled with all three baserunners touching home in the 7th inning. Philadelphia had a total of 15 hits for the game. 

The win went to Denny(11-13) who allowed 1 run in the game. Ray Fontenot(8-15) was hit with the loss. He allowed 3 runs and 7 hits in 5 innings.

September 21, 1985: Tigers (89-59) at Red Sox (86-62)

John Grubb hit a homerun and had 3 RBI as the Detroit Tigers beat the Boston Red Sox by a score of 9 to 6. 

Detroit took the lead for keeps in the 6th inning when they came up with 2 runs on 2 hits. The highlight belonged to Grubb who deflated the mood of the partisan fans when he clubbed a two-run home run. Detroit had 15 hits overall, while Boston had 10. 

Dan Petry(15-11) picked up the victory, allowing 5 runs in 6 and 1/3 innings. Willie Hernandez got the save, his 33rd. Oil Can Boyd(15-10) was tagged with the loss.

September 20, 1985: Mariners (72-75) at Rangers (71-75)

Gary Ward hit one over the fence and had 2 RBI as the Texas Rangers beat the Seattle Mariners by a score of 5 to 3. 

Texas jumped out to the early lead in the first inning scoring one runner on 3 hits. Seattle was out-hit by Texas, 12 hits to 6. 

Mike Mason(15-12) was the winner allowing 3 runs in 7 innings. Mason got help from Greg Harris who was credited with his 34th save. The losing pitcher was Frank Wills(5-12).

September 20, 1985: Dodgers (89-59) at Giants (65-82)

Bob Welch went 9 strong innings and third baseman Bill Madlock had 4 hits and scored 3 times as the powerful Los Angeles Dodgers topped the San Francisco Giants by a score of 9 to 1 at CANDLESTICK PARK. 

Welch(15-9) was very good in the win. He allowed just 5 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings. Los Angeles finished with 14 hits in the victory. 

Jim Gott(11-11) was tagged with the loss. He allowed a few too many baserunners giving up 7 hits and 3 walks in 4 innings.

September 20, 1985: A's (65-82) at White Sox (72-74)

Chris Codiroli blanked Chicago allowing just 3 hits and Alfredo Griffin had 3 base hits at COMISKEY PARK where the Oakland Athletics beat the Chicago White Sox 3 to 0. 

Codiroli(8-16) dominated Chicago hitters. He gave up just 3 hits and no walks in 9 innings. Chicago proved to be no trouble in the bottom of the 9th. 

The losing pitcher was Britt Burns(11-17). While he was the losing pitcher, he still struck out 14 batters in 9 innings.

It was a good day for Houston thanks to Reynolds. He tripled bringing in a run in the 4th inning, tripled in the 6th inning and doubled in the 8th inning. Houston finished with 15 hits while Cincinnati ended up with 7. 

Nolan Ryan(15-16) picked up the victory, allowing 1 run in 6 and 1/3 innings. Tom Browning(14-15) ended up with the loss. He surrendered 6 runs and 6 hits in 2/3 of an inning.

September 20, 1985: Twins (65-83) at Royals (79-67)

Charlie Leibrandt had a strong outing and George Brett cracked a homer and had 3 RBI as the Kansas City Royals bested the Minnesota Twins 7 to 0 at ROYALS STADIUM. 

Brett enjoyed a big evening at the plate. He cracked a two-run shot in the 1st inning, delivered a single in the 5th inning and doubled knocking in a run in the 7th inning. Kansas City managed 12 hits in their victory. 

For Leibrandt(16-9) it was his 3rd shutout this year. John Butcher(4-20) absorbed the loss. He gave up 9 hits and no walks in 5 innings.

September 20, 1985: Braves (44-103) at Padres (78-69)

In a good matchup it was the San Diego Padres 6, the hapless Atlanta Braves 4 at JACK MURPHY STADIUM. 

San Diego came through with the game-winning runs in the bottom of the 8th inning scoring 2 runs on 3 hits. Mario Ramirez got things going when he laced a base-knock. Steve Garvey came next and he lined a base-hit. Garvey took second on the throw. After an out was recorded, Carmelo Martinez then lined a single knocking in a run. After another out, Jeff Dedmon then unleashed a wild pitch scoring the final run of the inning. San Diego banged out 9 hits on the night. 

The victory was credited to Roy Lee Jackson(4-0) who went 1 inning, allowing no runs. Goose Gossage was credited with his 31st save. Dedmon(4-4) took the loss in relief.

September 20, 1985: Yankees (82-65) at Orioles (73-74)

Eddie Murray blasted a homerun and had 5 RBI as the Baltimore Orioles defeated the New York Yankees by a score of 8 to 5 at MEMORIAL STADIUM. 

Murray helped send the fans home happy. He laced a one-base hit bringing home two baserunners in the 3rd inning and smacked a three-run homer in the 6th inning. Baltimore and New York each finished the night with 11 hits. 

Ken Dixon(6-13) got the win allowing 4 runs in 6 innings. Don Aase recorded the save, his 23rd. Ed Whitson(6-17) was the losing pitcher. He was touched for 11 hits and 7 walks in 6 innings.

September 20, 1985: Pirates (67-80) at Mets (93-54)

Lee Mazzilli left the yard and had 3 RBI at SHEA STADIUM as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the New York Mets by the count of 6 to 4. 

In the 6th inning Pittsburgh went on top for good as they scored 2 runs on 3 base hits. New York had a chance in the 9th but they came up short. 

The win went to Lee Tunnell(3-12) who allowed 2 runs in 7 innings. The loss was charged to Ed Lynch(20-7). He pitched 6 innings giving up 8 hits and 1 walk.
