Atlee Hammaker threw a 3 hit shutout and Dan Driessen hit 2 doubles as the San Francisco Giants defeated the Cincinnati Reds 5 to 0 at CANDLESTICK PARK. 

Hammaker(17-8) dominated Cincinnati hitters. He was stingy on the mound, allowing just 3 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings. After the 4th inning, neither team was able to score. 

Jay Tibbs(13-18) was the loser. He was touched for 10 hits and 2 walks in 5 innings.

September 30, 1985: Orioles (78-78) at Yankees (88-68)

Left fielder Mike Young had 4 hits and 3 RBI at YANKEE STADIUM as the Baltimore Orioles beat the New York Yankees 10 to 5. 

The New York fans didn't appreciate the big day Young had. He delivered a single in the 2nd inning, cracked a two-run shot in the 3rd inning, ripped a one-base hit in the 7th inning and banged out a base-hit plating a run in the 8th inning. For the game Baltimore out-hit New York 16 to 8. 

Storm Davis(16-10) picked up the victory, allowing 1 run in 7 and 1/3 innings. Bob Shirley(9-4) took the loss. He got hit pretty hard, allowing 8 hits and 3 walks in 5 innings.

September 29, 1985: Rangers (78-77) at Mariners (74-82)

Dave Schmidt went the distance at The Kingdome as the Texas Rangers beat the Seattle Mariners by the count of 4 to 1. 

Schmidt(9-5) put on a good performance. He surrendered only 6 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings. Texas finished with just 5 hits in the victory. 

Bill Swift(6-10) was the loser. He pitched 5 and 2/3 innings giving up 5 hits and 2 walks.

September 29, 1985: Giants (71-84) at Dodgers (92-64)

In an entertaining game at DODGER STADIUM the final score was the dominant Los Angeles Dodgers 7, the San Francisco Giants 4. 

Los Angeles brought 4 runs across the plate in the 3rd inning when they came up with 4 base hits. That was all the runs Orel Hershiser(21-8) needed. Tom Niedenfuer earned the save with a perfect ninth, his 25th save. 

The loss was charged to Mike Krukow(9-17). He allowed a few too many baserunners giving up 9 hits and 3 walks in 6 innings.

George Brett rocketed 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI at METRODOME as the Kansas City Royals beat the Minnesota Twins 8 to 2. 

Brett was a thorn in the side of the hometown fans as he enjoyed a fine day at their team's expense. He rifled a three-run blast in the 1st inning and clubbed a solo home run in the 5th inning. Dan Quisenberry came through with 2 and 1/3 perfect innings to earn his 32nd save. 

Danny Jackson(12-12) went 6 and 2/3 innings allowing 2 runs for the victory. John Butcher(4-21) was the losing pitcher. He surrended 4 homeruns in his 5 innings.

September 29, 1985: Padres (80-75) at Braves (47-108)

In a close game the Atlanta Braves scored 4 runs in the 1st inning and got by the San Diego Padres by the score of 5 to 3. 

Rick Camp(5-13) contributed a very nice performance in relief. He surrendered only 1 hit and 2 walks in 3 and 2/3 innings. After the 4th inning, neither team was able to score. 

Bruce Sutter earned the save, his 17th. Lamarr Hoyt(15-17) absorbed the loss. He gave up 6 hits and 1 walk in 5 innings.

September 29, 1985: White Sox (79-76) at A's (67-89)

Right fielder Mike Davis collected 2 extra-base hits as the Oakland Athletics won a heart-stopping victory over the Chicago White Sox, 3 to 1. 

Oakland had the winning rally in the bottom of the 9th inning scoring 2 runs on 2 hits. After an out was recorded, Bruce Bochte got things going when he doubled. Dave Kingman followed next and he popped a two-run bomb over the fence giving Oakland the win much to the delight of the home town crowd. Oakland rapped out 7 hits for the afternoon. 

The winning pitcher was Steve Ontiveros(4-4) who allowed no runs in 1 inning. The losing pitcher was Floyd Bannister(15-15). While he was the losing pitcher, he still struck out 11 batters in 8 and 1/3 innings.

September 29, 1985: Astros (76-79) at Reds (83-72)

Alan Ashby touched them all and had 2 RBI as the Houston Astros defeated the Cincinnati Reds 6 to 5 at Crosley Field. 

Joe Niekro(13-16) pitched a fine game. He allowed 8 hits and 4 walks in 8 innings. Cincinnati tried unsuccessfully to come back in the 9th. 

Dave Smith recorded his 27th save. The loss was charged to Tom Browning(15-16). He surrendered 6 runs and 9 hits in 6 innings.

September 29, 1985: Angels (64-91) at Indians (59-98)

First baseman Pat Tabler had 3 base hits and Don Schulze had a strong outing as the Cleveland Indians beat the California Angels in 19 innings by a score of 4 to 3. 

Both teams had scored 3 runs after nine full innings. Cleveland won the hard fought contest in the 19th inning. Brook Jacoby stroked a single. Andre Thornton was a strikeout victim, unable to help out. One out later, Tabler then tripled resulting in an exciting win for Cleveland and a wild post-game celebration by the home town fans. Cleveland out-hit California for the game, 15 hits to 10. 

Jamie Easterly(7-5) got credit for the victory, pitching 4 innings and allowing no runs. Donnie Moore(3-6) was the loser in relief. He allowed 2 hits and no walks in 2 and 2/3 innings.

September 29, 1985: Cardinals (95-61) at Expos (76-80)

David Palmer took a no-hitter into the 7th inning at OLYMPIC STADIUM as the Montreal Expos beat the St. Louis Cardinals by the count of 2 to 0. 

Palmer(8-14) was virtually untouchable. He didn't give up much, just 4 hits and 3 walks in 9 innings. The right-handed Palmer lost his no-hit bid when Tommy Herr singled with nobody out in the 7th inning. The pitchers took over after the 4th inning as neither team was able to score again. 

John Tudor(22-7) was the losing pitcher. He allowed just 4 hits and 1 walk in 7 innings.

September 29, 1985: Blue Jays (98-58) at Brewers (72-84)

The Milwaukee Brewers readily handled Toronto Blue Jays by a score of 8 to 4 at COUNTY STADIUM. 

Milwaukee promptly took the lead in their half of the first when they blasted Toronto for 7 runs on 7 hits. That was all the offense they were to need. Milwaukee rapped out 11 hits for the afternoon. 

The win was credited to Moose Haas(12-15) who went 7 and 1/3 innings allowing 1 run. The losing pitcher was Doyle Alexander(20-10). He allowed 7 hits and 1 walk in 2/3 of an inning.

September 29, 1985: Phillies (66-90) at Cubs (79-78)

At WRIGLEY FIELD the Chicago Cubs easily handled the Philadelphia Phillies by the score of 7 to 3. 

Chicago came up with 4 runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning with the help of 4 hits. That early scoring held up. Both teams totaled 10 hits on the afternoon. 

Dennis Eckersley(20-9) went 8 innings allowing 2 runs for the win. Charles Hudson(8-12) was charged with the loss. He was knocked around by Chicago, allowing 9 hits and 2 walks in 5 innings.

September 29, 1985: Red Sox (88-68) at Tigers (93-63)

Second baseman Lou Whitaker launched 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI and Todd Crane had an impressive outing as the phenomenal Detroit Tigers destroyed the Boston Red Sox by a score of 12 to 1 at TIGER STADIUM. 

Whitaker helped send the fans home happy. He cracked a solo homerun in the 1st inning and lifted one out of the park for a two run home run in the 2nd inning. Detroit out-hit Boston for the game, 15 hits to 6. 

The winning pitcher was Crane(17-9) who allowed 1 run in 8 innings. Al Nipper(10-15) was the loser. He surrendered 6 runs and 6 hits in 1 inning.

September 29, 1985: Mets (100-56) at Pirates (69-87)

Mookie Wilson had 4 hits and 3 RBI as the powerful New York Mets bested the Pittsburgh Pirates 12 to 9 at Forbes Field. 

Wilson enjoyed a big day at the plate. He ripped a base-knock in the 1st inning, doubled which plated a run in the 4th inning, slapped a single knocking in a run in the 5th inning and tripled which brought home a run in the 7th inning. New York finished with 13 hits in the victory. 

The win went to Sid Fernandez(24-7) who allowed 6 runs in 5 innings. Jesse Orosco recorded his 16th save. Jose Deleon(10-18) was hit with the loss. New York scored big getting 6 runs off him in 4 innings.

September 29, 1985: Orioles (77-78) at Yankees (88-67)

Lee Lacy had 5 hits and 4 RBI as the Baltimore Orioles defeated the New York Yankees in 15 innings 10 to 8 at YANKEE STADIUM. 

Both teams were tied at 6 runs apiece after nine innings. Baltimore came out the victor in the 15th inning. Fritz Connally led off and he drew a walk. Rick Dempsey was the next batter, but he struck out. Alan Wiggins then delivered a single. Wiggins was safe at second on a stolen base. Lacy stepped into the box and slapped a base-hit driving in two more baserunners. The score went back-and-forth with the lead changing 5 times. 

Tippy Martinez(6-5) got credit for the victory, pitching 2 innings and allowing no runs. Dennis Rasmussen(8-7) absorbed the loss in relief. He was not very effective, surrendering 3 runs in 2 and 1/3 innings.

The winning pitcher was Tim Stoddard(3-4) who allowed no runs in 1 inning. The loss was charged to Rick Camp(4-13) in relief. He allowed 5 runs and 4 hits in 1 inning.

Bud Black(15-10) had a steady outing. He surrendered 8 hits and 1 walk in 5 and 1/3 innings. Black whiffed an impressive total of 6 Minnesota batters. Kansas City totaled 12 hits on the afternoon.

Fisk was a source of great heartache for the Oakland faithful all day. He just kept pounding out hits! He slapped a one-base hit in the 4th inning, hit a bases-empty home run in the 5th inning, popped a two-run clout over the fence in the 7th inning and doubled in the 9th inning. Bob James was perfect in relief and got the save, his 35th. 

The winning pitcher was Britt Burns(12-18) who allowed 5 runs in 6 and 2/3 innings. Bill Krueger(8-12) was hit with the loss.

Rick Reuschel carried a no-hitter into the 6th inning at Forbes Field as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the New York Mets 2 to 0. 

Reuschel(20-7) was virtually untouchable. He allowed only 1 hit and 1 walk in 9 innings. The right-handed Reuschel lost his chance for a no-hitter when Wally Backman singled with two outs in the 6th inning. Both teams' bats went to sleep after the 4th inning with no runs scored after that point. 

Ed Lynch(20-9) was the losing pitcher.

At MUNICIPAL STADIUM the Cleveland Indians outscored the California Angels 5 to 2. 

Neal Heaton(11-17) delivered a fine performance for Cleveland. He was reached for 8 hits and 3 walks in 8 innings. California out-hit Cleveland 10 to 7, but Cleveland ended up with more runs. 

Tom Waddell was credited with his 18th save. Kirk McCaskill(14-16) was the losing pitcher. He allowed 5 hits and 1 walk in 7 innings.

The San Francisco Giants scored 4 runs in the 7th inning and edged the Los Angeles Dodgers at DODGER STADIUM by the score of 5 to 4. 

The game was won by San Francisco with a run in the top of the 9th inning. Joel Youngblood ripped a single. Dan Gladden was next and he ripped a base-hit. One out later, Chris Brown dug into the batters box next, but he struck out. Jeff Leonard followed and he lined a single to load the bases. Dan Driessen came to the plate and reached on an error scoring the run. Los Angeles was set down quietly in the bottom of the 9th. 

Frank Williams(3-2) went 2 innings allowing 1 run for the win. Mark Davis preserved the game for Williams, recording his his 19th save. Ken Howell(3-4) took the loss in relief. He was a hard-luck loser, pitching 1 and 2/3 innings and not allowing an earned run.

Ted Higuera had a strong outing at COUNTY STADIUM as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Toronto Blue Jays 5 to 3.

Sanderson(13-9) was indeed brilliant as he hand-cuffed the Philadelphia offense. He didn't allow much, just 4 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings. Chicago totaled 7 hits on the afternoon.

September 28, 1985: Orioles (76-78) at Yankees (88-66)

The New York Yankees offense put up 5 runs on the scoreboard in the 5th inning and easily topped the Baltimore Orioles; the final score was 12 to 6. 

Ken Griffey enjoyed a great day at the plate. Every time he came up in the latter innings, the crowd was on their feet cheering. He tripled which brought home a run in the 4th inning, tripled with all three runners coming home in the 5th inning and smashed a solo-shot out of the park in the 7th inning. New York out-hit Baltimore for the game, 13 hits to 6. 

The win went to Phil Niekro(14-12) who allowed 6 runs in 7 innings. Mike Boddicker(4-14) was the loser. He allowed a few too many baserunners giving up 6 hits and 5 walks in 3 and 1/3 innings.

Minnesota erupted with the game winning runs in the 9th inning with 2 runs on 2 base hits. Tim Teufel led off and started the rally when he ripped a base-hit. Mike Stenhouse next to the plate and he bombed a two-run dinger giving Minnesota the victory as 17,244 happy fans celebrated wildly. Minnesota rapped out 8 hits for the night. 

Viola(15-17) got the victory, allowing 2 runs for the game. Bret Saberhagen(17-9) ended up with the loss.

Right fielder Claudell Washington had 2 base hits at FULTON CTY STADIUM as the Atlanta Braves beat the San Diego Padres by the count of 6 to 3. 

Atlanta scored all of the necessary runs in the 7th inning scoring 6 runners on 7 hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Dale Murphy who made the home-town crowd a happy bunch when he stroked a single plating two runs. Atlanta banged out 11 hits on the night. 

Rick Mahler(11-17) got credit for the victory, pitching 7 innings and allowing 3 runs. Bruce Sutter recorded his 16th save. Tim Stoddard(2-4) took the loss in relief.
