October 3, 1985: Pirates (70-89) at Cubs (81-79)

Ron Cey had 2 base hits and 3 RBI at WRIGLEY FIELD where the Chicago Cubs beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 10 to 3. 

Pittsburgh found themselves trailing quickly as the Chicago bats came through in the first inning plating 2 runs on 4 base hits. Bob Dernier led off and keyed the rally when he ripped a single. One out later, Billy Hatcher struck out, unable to help the rally. Keith Moreland then doubled resulting in a run. Cey followed next and he stroked a base-hit scoring the final run of the inning. Chicago had 14 hits for the afternoon while Pittsburgh had 8. 

Steve Trout(14-16) went 7 innings allowing 1 run for the victory. Rick Rhoden(11-17) was the loser. He got hit hard, allowing 11 hits and 2 walks in 3 and 1/3 innings.

October 3, 1985: Red Sox (90-69) at Orioles (79-80)

Wade Boggs had 2 base hits at MEMORIAL STADIUM as the Boston Red Sox beat the Baltimore Orioles by the count of 2 to 1. 

Boston scored 1 run in the top of the 5th inning when they came up with 4 base hits. That run would be the difference in the contest. Boston had 11 hits for the game and Baltimore had 6. 

The victory went to Bruce Hurst(14-12) who went 8 innings, allowing 1 run. Bob Stanley got the save, his 38th. Mike Boddicker(4-15) was given the loss.

October 2, 1985: Mariners (74-84) at Indians (61-98)

Curt Wardle came through with a solid 9 innings and Brook Jacoby had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the Cleveland Indians bested the struggling Seattle Mariners 6 to 2 at MUNICIPAL STADIUM. 

Cleveland set the tone of the game in the first inning when they came up with 2 runs on 3 hits. Cleveland managed 12 hits in their victory. 

Wardle(4-11) was the winner allowing 2 runs for the game. The losing pitcher was Matt Young(17-14). He was knocked around pretty good, giving up 6 runs in 5 innings.


October 2, 1985: Reds (84-78) at Padres (83-75)

In a good matchup it was the San Diego Padres 3, the Cincinnati Reds 1 at JACK MURPHY STADIUM. 

San Diego erupted with the game winning runs in the bottom of the 8th inning with 2 runs utilizing 4 base hits. Tim Flannery led off and got things going when he doubled. Miguel Dilone came next and he banged out a single. After an out was recorded, Graig Nettles then doubled scoring a single run. Terry Kennedy dug into the batters box next, but he struck out. Kevin McReynolds stepped into the box and slapped a one-base hit scoring the final run of the inning. The teams had been locked in a scoreless duel until the 7th inning. 

The victory was credited to Dave Dravecky(14-12) who went 8 innings, allowing 1 run. Goose Gossage preserved the game for Dravecky, recording his his 33rd save. Tom Hume(3-3) suffered the loss in relief.

October 2, 1985: A's (69-90) at Rangers (79-79)

Dwayne Murphy launched 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI as the Oakland Athletics topped the Texas Rangers by a score of 9 to 8 at ARLINGTON STADIUM. However the highlight of the game was Oddibe McDowell hit for the cycle and drove in 5 runs for the Rangers.

Murphy provided the offensive punch. He doubled in the 4th inning, smashed a solo-shot out of the park in the 6th inning and bombed a two-run dinger in the 7th inning. Jose Rijo(18-7) got help from Steve Ontiveros who pitched a perfect ninth and was credited with his 8th save. 

Burt Hooton(10-10) was tagged with the loss. He surrended 4 homeruns in his 5 and 1/3 innings.  

October 2, 1985: Braves (48-110) at Dodgers (93-66)

Rick Honeycutt recorded a complete game shutout as the very talented Los Angeles Dodgers beat the woeful Atlanta Braves by a score of 6 to 0. 

Honeycutt(12-7) came through with a virtuoso performance against the Atlanta hitters. He surrendered only 5 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings. Los Angeles had a total of 10 hits for the game. 

Rick Mahler(11-18) took the loss. He gave up 4 runs and 6 hits in 7 innings.

October 2, 1985: Phillies (67-91) at Expos (77-81)

Tim Raines had 4 hits and 2 RBI at OLYMPIC STADIUM where the Montreal Expos beat the Philadelphia Phillies by the score of 7 to 4. 

The home town fans were very appreciative of the fine hitting performance provided by Raines. He tripled in the 1st inning, smacked a single in the 3rd inning, tripled bringing in two baserunners in the 4th inning and ripped a base-knock in the 6th inning. Montreal finished with 14 hits while Philadelphia ended up with 8. 

Bryn Smith(12-15) went 8 innings allowing 3 runs for the victory. John Denny(11-15) was the losing pitcher. He got hammered, allowing 8 hits and 2 walks in 3 and 2/3 innings.

October 2, 1985: Angels (65-93) at Royals (87-70)

Reggie Jackson cracked a homer and had 2 RBI at ROYALS STADIUM where the California Angels beat the Kansas City Royals in 10 innings by the score of 3 to 1. 

The game was deadlocked at 1 after nine full innings. California won the hard fought contest in the 10th inning. After two outs Brian Downing got things going when he lined a one-base hit. Jackson was next and he popped a two-run clout over the fence. California rapped out 10 hits for the night. 

The win went to Pat Clements(4-1) who allowed no runs in 3 innings. Clements got help from Stu Cliburn who was credited with his 4th save. Joe Beckwith(11-7) was the loser in relief. He surrendered 2 runs and 2 hits in 1 inning.

October 2, 1985: Mets (101-57) at Cardinals (96-62)

Vince Coleman had 4 hits and scored 3 times at BUSCH STADIUM where the St. Louis Cardinals beat the New York Mets 7 to 4. 

St. Louis jumped out to the early lead in the first inning scoring a single run using 2 hits. New York made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across. 

Bob Forsch(14-8) picked up the victory, allowing 4 runs in 8 and 2/3 innings. Forsch was helped out by Jeff Lahti who recorded his 26th save. The loss was charged to Ron Darling(17-15). He pitched 6 and 1/3 innings giving up 10 hits and 1 walk.

October 2, 1985: Blue Jays (99-59) at Tigers (94-64)

Darrell Evans slammed 2 homeruns at TIGER STADIUM as the Detroit Tigers beat the Toronto Blue Jays 3 to 2. 

Detroit took the lead for good in the 2nd inning plating one baserunner utilizing 2 base hits. Lance Parrish tripled. Evans next to the plate and he drew a walk. Larry Herndon then stroked a one-base hit scoring the run. Toronto had a chance in the 9th but they came up short. 

Dan Petry(16-12) went 7 and 1/3 innings allowing 1 run for the win. Willie Hernandez recorded the save, his 36th. Jim Clancy(10-16) took the loss. He gave up 3 runs and 7 hits in 7 innings.

October 2, 1985: Astros (78-80) at Giants (72-86)

At CANDLESTICK PARK the San Francisco Giants were battered 10 to 5 by the Houston Astros. 

Houston had the game winning rally in the top of the 9th inning scoring 5 runners on 5 hits. The big moment was provided by Mark Bailey who disappointed the partisan crowd when he doubled scoring two baserunners. Houston managed 10 hits in their victory. 

The victory went to Jeff Calhoun(5-0) who went 2 innings, allowing no runs. The loss was charged to Scott Garrelts(8-7) in relief. He pitched 1 and 1/3 innings allowing 3 hits and 3 walks.


October 2, 1985: Brewers (73-85) at Yankees (89-69)

The Milwaukee Brewers edged the New York Yankees in 10 innings at YANKEE STADIUM by the score of 3 to 2. 

Both teams had scored 2 runs after nine full innings. Milwaukee came out on top in the 10th inning. Ed Romero reached on an error. Cecil Cooper was next to the plate, but was promptly struck out. Ted Simmons then singled. Paul Householder was the next batter, but he struck out. Rick Manning stepped into the box and doubled scoring the run. Milwaukee had a total of 8 hits for the game. 

Rollie Fingers(3-6) got credit for the victory, pitching 2 innings and allowing no runs. Bob McClure recorded his 11th save. Dave Righetti(0-5) was tagged with the loss in relief. He was pinned with the loss despite not allowing an earned run in his 1 and 1/3 innings of work.

October 2, 1985: Pirates (70-88) at Cubs (80-79)

Ray Fontenot pitched 8 strong innings at WRIGLEY FIELD where the Chicago Cubs beat the Pittsburgh Pirates by the score of 3 to 2. 

Chicago jumped on top of Pittsburgh in the bottom of the 4th inning plating an isolated run on 3 hits. Pittsburgh made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across. 

Fontenot(9-16) went 8 innings allowing 1 run for the victory. Fontenot got relief help from Lee Smith who gained credit for his 38th save. The losing pitcher was Lee Tunnell(3-13). He allowed a few too many baserunners giving up 8 hits and 2 walks in 4 and 2/3 innings.

October 2, 1985: Red Sox (89-69) at Orioles (79-79)

Oil Can Boyd hurled a 3 hitter at MEMORIAL STADIUM where the Boston Red Sox beat the Baltimore Orioles 4 to 2. 

Baltimore was unable to claim the lead after Boston went ahead in the top of the 2nd inning scoring one runner. Boston had only 6 hits for the night. 

The victory was credited to Boyd(16-11) who went the distance, allowing 2 runs. Scott McGregor(12-11) took the loss. He was the victim of a defensive lapse and did not allow an earned run in the game.

October 1, 1985: Mariners (74-83) at Indians (60-98)

Mike Hargrove had 2 base hits and 2 RBI as the Cleveland Indians defeated the Seattle Mariners by a score of 6 to 5 at MUNICIPAL STADIUM. 

Bryan Clark(4-3) was the winning pitcher with a solid relief performance. He went 1 inning and surrended up no hits and 1 walk. Seattle had a chance in the 9th but they came up short. 

Clark was helped out by Tom Waddell who recorded his 19th save. Mike Moore(19-14) took the loss. He surrendered 5 runs and 6 hits in 6 and 1/3 innings.


October 1, 1985: Padres (82-75) at Dodgers (92-66)

Catcher Terry Kennedy hit 2 doubles and had 2 RBI as the San Diego Padres topped the Los Angeles Dodgers by a score of 5 to 4 at DODGER STADIUM. 

San Diego scored the deciding run in the top of the 9th inning. After an out was recorded, Bobby Brown drew a walk. Steve Garvey stepped into the batter's box and he hit a single. After another out, Kennedy then doubled scoring the run. San Diego out-hit Los Angeles for the game, 14 hits to 9. 

The victory was credited to Tim Stoddard(4-4) who went 1 inning, allowing no runs. Goose Gossage got the save, his 32nd. Ken Howell(3-5) was the loser in relief. He gave up 2 hits and 1 walk in 1 inning.

October 1, 1985: A's (68-90) at Rangers (79-78)

Catcher Don Slaught had 2 base hits at ARLINGTON STADIUM as the Texas Rangers beat the Oakland Athletics by the count of 5 to 3. 

Chris Welsh(4-3) won the game with a masterful relief performance. He did not allow a hit or a walk in his 1 inning. Oakland could do no damage in the 9th. Welsh was helped out by Greg Harris who recorded his 37th save. 

Don Sutton(9-19) was charged with the loss. He gave up 5 runs and 6 hits in 7 innings.

October 1, 1985: Mets (101-56) at Cardinals (95-62)

Howard Johnson had 2 base hits and 3 RBI and Dwight Gooden threw a complete game shutout as the strong New York Mets bested the St. Louis Cardinals 4 to 0 at BUSCH STADIUM to clinch the National League East. 

Gooden(21-7) was very good in the win. He surrendered only 7 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings. New York banged out 8 hits on the night. 

Danny Cox(11-13) gave a brilliant performance was the loser. He gave up 3 hits and 3 walks in 7 innings.
