June 5, 1985: Mets (32-17) at Dodgers (33-19)

Dwight Gooden whiffed 14 batters at DODGER STADIUM as the New York Mets, running on all cylinders, ripped the Los Angeles Dodgers by a large 11 to 0 margin.

Gooden(8-1) pitched one of his finer games as he simply was too much for the Los Angeles batters. He didn't give up much, just 6 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings. New York had 16 hits for the night.

The losing pitcher was Orel Hershiser(7-4). He was hit hard and gave up 11 hits and 3 walks in 5 and 2/3 innings. Tommy Lasorda was impressed with Gooden and his 14 strikeouts. 'It's tough to generate runs if you can't make contact with the ball.'
