Andy Van Slyke had 2 base hits and 4 RBI as the St. Louis Cardinals outscored the Pittsburgh Pirates 5 to 3. 

Pittsburgh was unable to recover after St. Louis went ahead in the 3rd inning when they came up with 2 runs on 3 hits. St. Louis had 14 hits for the night while Pittsburgh had 11. 

The victory was credited to Bob Forsch(6-4) who went 8 and 1/3 innings, allowing 3 runs. Jeff Lahti got the save, his 13th. Rick Rhoden(3-8) was hit with the loss.
