Sid Fernandez took a no-hitter into the 7th inning and Gary Carter had 2 base hits as the New York Mets outscored the Chicago Cubs 2 to 1. 

Fernandez(10-2) pitched well for New York in their victory. He was reached for 5 hits and 4 walks in 7 and 2/3 innings. The left-handed Fernandez lost a no-hitter when Keith Moreland singled with nobody out in the 7th inning. Chicago made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across. 

Fernandez got relief help from Roger McDowell who gained credit for his 3rd save. The loss was charged to Dick Ruthven(1-3). With this win, New York has a 38-23 record. They have been 6-4 lately. With the loss, the Chicago ballclub's record is 35-25.
