Wally Backman had 2 base hits and Dwight Gooden hurled a fine complete game shutout as the New York Mets topped the Montreal Expos by a score of 2 to 0 at SHEA STADIUM. 

Gooden(10-1) had a strong outing. He gave up just 9 hits and 1 walk in 9 innings. Montreal had 9 hits in the game while New York had 5, but New York had the more timely hits. 

David Palmer(3-9) was hit with the loss. He gave up 2 runs and 4 hits in 5 and 2/3 innings.
