August 5, 1985: Tigers (62-43) at Royals (59-46)

Third baseman George Brett jacked one out of the ballyard and had 5 RBI as the Kansas City Royals outscored the Detroit Tigers 8 to 7.

Brett helped send the fans home happy. He laced a one-base hit in the 4th inning, doubled bringing home two baserunners in the 6th inning and lofted a three-run homer in the 7th inning. Detroit had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short.

The victory went to Joe Beckwith(7-2) who went 2 and 1/3 innings, allowing no runs. Dan Quisenberry got the save, his 22nd. The losing pitcher was Aurelio Lopez(0-3) in relief. He was a hard-luck loser, pitching 1 and 2/3 innings and not allowing an earned run.

Sparky Anderson was subdued after the ballgame, 'That one really hurts. If our guys had simply played more fundamentally sound, we could have won that one. That is what really ticks me off!'
