The Oakland Athletics and the Detroit Tigers locked up in an exciting one-run game at OAKLAND COLISEUM. The final score was the Oakland Athletics 6, the Detroit Tigers 5. 

Don Sutton(7-14) was solid if not spectacular. He went 6 and 2/3 innings surrendering 10 hits and 4 walks. Detroit had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short. 

Jay Howell earned the save, his 22nd. Dan Petry(13-10) was tagged with the loss. He allowed 6 hits and 4 walks in 3 innings. 

Sparky Anderson was in a sour mood after the game. 'Even you guys up in the press box know why we lost this game. We made too many mistakes.'
