September 23, 1985: Pirates (67-83) at Cardinals (90-60)

Tommy Herr had 4 hits and 2 RBI and Ricky Horton went 4 strong innings as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates in 16 innings by the score of 5 to 4 at BUSCH STADIUM. 

The game was deadlocked at 4 after nine full innings. St. Louis won the hard fought contest in the 16th inning. After an out was recorded, Ozzie Smith banged out a single. Mike Jorgensen next to the plate and he doubled resulting in an exciting win for St. Louis and a raucous post-game celebration by the home town fans. St. Louis kept the scorekeepers busy in the 2nd inning when they had 3 runs on 3 hits. St. Louis had 23 hits for the game and Pittsburgh had 13. 

Horton(9-2) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 4 innings. Cecilio Guante(2-4) was the loser in relief. He gave up 2 hits and 1 walk in 1 inning.
