The deciding run was scored by New York in the bottom of the 9th. Howard Johnson laced a base-knock. Danny Heep followed next and he stroked a one-base hit. Len Dykstra then singled giving New York the victory as 48,320 happy fans celebrated wildly. New York banged out 10 hits on the afternoon.
Roger McDowell(5-5) went 2 innings allowing no runs for the victory. The losing pitcher was Gary Lucas(2-2) in relief. He allowed 3 hits and no walks without retiring a batter.
