April 15, 1985, Game 70: Phillies (4-1) at Cubs (2-3)

In game 1 of this 3 game set only 8,347 Cub fans showed up at the friendly confines. At certain points in the game it was quiet you could here a pin drop. Starting for the Phillies would be John Denny and for the Cubs Steve Trout.

The Cubs open the scoring on the 3rd as a Dunston triple would score Davis who got on via a single. Denny would get Trout to bounce out to Jeltz and Dunston would hold at 3rd. Next up was Bosley who would scorch one between Russell and Samuel. Russell would make the play and flip to Denny covering 1st and Dunston would score. Denny would get the next to batters out and it is 2-0 Cubs.

In the 4th the Cubs would look to add to their lead. Durham would lead off with a single and then advance to 3rd on a Moreland single to right. Lopes would come up and smack a smoking line drive towards Schmidt. Schmidt dive to his left and snares the ball, gets up steps on third to get Durham who was running on contact. Then he fires to first to get Moreland and it's a triple play to end the Cubs threat.

The Philles would get some life in the 6th. Hayes would single then steal 2nd and reach 3rd on a Davis throwing error. Wilson would single and that woulsd put runners on 1st and 2nd. Russell would take a Trout fastball and put in the leftfield seats for a 3 run homer and it is now 4-2 Phillies. Trout would get the next 2 hitters to end the inning and that would end his day.

In the 7th the Phillies would add to their lead. Virgil with runners on 1st and second would double scoring Samuel and it is 5-2 Philles. THey would add 3 more in the the 9th.VIrgil would add to his big night with his 3rd hit, a single that would score Samuel who got on via a walk. Russel would also add to his night as he would hit one off the right center wall for a double and that would score Schmidt and Virgil to make ie 8- 2 Phillies.

Russell and Virgil would provide all the RBI as Russell would finish the day with 5 and Virgil with 3. Denny would get the CG Win his 2nd. He would end the game by striking out Speier. HIs only k of the game.
