April 21, 1985 Game 140: Indians (3-7) at Yankees (6-3)

Its a beautiful day in the Bronx today. The Indians take on the Yankees at Yankee Stadium.  The Yankees have taken the first two games by scores of 5-2 and 2-0.  They pin their hopes for a sweep on the shoulders of Ed Whitson and the Indians send Vern Ruhle to the hill.

It will be a hit parade today and the Indians get it started in the 1st.  Franco doubles, Hall doubles and that scores Franco scores.  The Yankees answer back in the 4th.  Mattingly singles, Winfield is issued a walk and Griffey hits one over the short right-field porch for a 3 run homer and the Yankees are up 3-1. 

In the 5th is where everything came unraveled for both teams.  The Indians jump all over Whitson,  Butler singles and steals 2nd, Franco singles, Hall singles and Butler comes around to score.  Tabler hits a 3 run homer his 1st of the season.  Vuckovich singles, Jacoby singles, Williard singles and Vuckovich and Jacoby scores.  Butler than gets on due to a 2BE on Griffey.  Franco doubles and that scores Williard and Butler and it is 9-3 Indians.

The Yankees would not go quietly as they will hit Ruhle hard and he could not escape the 5th.  Wynegar singles, Mattingly singles, Winfield singles and Wynegar scores.  Hassey hits a deep fly to center and Mattingly scores.  Griffey singles, Pagliarulo singles and Winfield scores.  Meachem singles, Robertson singles and Winfield and Pagliarulo scores.  Henderson singles and Meachem scores and that ties the game at 9.

In the 8th the Yankees take the lead.  Wynegar flies out to right, Mattingly walks, Winfield strikesout, and Hassey hits a 2 run homer and that makes it 11-9.  Righetti works the 9th for his 2nd save and the Yankees sweep the Indians
