April 23, 1985 Game 158: Reds (8-5) at Astros (4-9)

The Reds are looking to get on top in the division and the Astros are just hoping not to get to far back early in the season.  The Reds send John Stuper to the hill and he has pitched well so far and he would face Ron Mathis who is making his first start of the season.

The Reds get 1 in the 1st. Milner triples and Parker hits a SACFLY to Mumphrey and Milner scores to make it 1-0 Reds.  In the 5th Bilardello hits a 2 run shot off of Mathis to make it 3-0.

In the 6th Nick Esasky hit a solo homer off of Mathis to make it 4-0 Reds. In the 7th Stuper helps out his own cause as he triples and will score on a Davis single to make it 5-0 Reds.  In the 8th the Astros finally get on the board; Bass doubles, Walling draws a walk, Mumphrey singles and Bass scores,  Garner follows with a single and Walling scores to make it 5-2.

In the 9th Esasky only needs a double to complete the cycle.  He rips a DiPino fastball down the rightfield line and Bass took off like a rocket and was able to cut it off before it reaches the corner.  He turns a guns it quickly and Esasky who is not the fleetest of foot is held to a single and is denied the cycle.  Franco closes out the 9th for his 5th save.

The Final Score 5-2 Reds
