April 23, 1985 Game 163: Mariners (5-8) at Twins (7-6)

The Twins are looking to take the 2nd game of this 3 game set. It was a balmy 70 degrees in the Metrodome today and 11,352 came out to see Frank Viola take Frank Willis.  Viola is the ace of the staff and Willis is making his first start of the year.

This one would turn out to be your classic pitchers duel.  Their numbers throughout this one were very similar.  In the 4th the Mariners open the scoring Thomas walks, Cowens doubles, Presley singles and both runners score and the score is 2-0 Mariners.

The Twins answer back in the 6th.  Hatcher singles, Hrbek doubles, Brunansky singles scoring Hatcher and Hrbek would hold at 3rd and the score s now 2-1.  The Twins tie it up in the when Brunansky launches a Willis fastball into orbit for his 6th home run of the seaon.

This game would go into extras and Viola was still on the mound.  He must have been tired because his change  up looked like a softball pitch and Thomas crushes it for a 2 run homer.  Nunez work the 10 and earns is 2nd save.

The Final Score 4-2 Mariners
