April 23, 1985 Game 162: Cubs (5-7) at Pirates (7-5)

It was a packed house at Three Rivers today, 9, 357 screaming Pirate fans cheered on their beloved team. Rick Reuschel takes the mound for the Pirtates and Rick Sutcliffe for the Cubs.  I was excited for the good pitching matchup.  Boy was I wrong.  The Pirates would get on the board early and often.  They would score in every inning but the 3rd.  Sutcliffe was a hot mess.

In the 1st Ray leads off with a walk Orsulak bounces into a 6-3 FC and Ray moves up to 2nd. Kemp singles scoring Ray and Thompson gets all of a Sutcliffe slider for a 2 run homer and a 3-0 Pirates lead.  They were not though and Brown draws a walk, Pena is safe at 1st on a Sandberg error,  Khalifa hits a ball to Speier that he can't handle and it goes down as an E6 and Brown scores and at the end of 1 its 4-0.  In the 2nd they would add to their lead, Orsulak doubles and Thompson singles with one out and Orsulak come around to score to make it 5-0.

In the 4th the Pirates make it 7-0 when Orsulak singles and steals 2nd and would then score on a Kemp single, Thompson walks and Morrison singles scoring Kemp.  That would end Sutcliffes evening and in the immortal words of Harry Doyle "Thank God".

George Frazier would take over for Sutcliffe and it didn't seem to matter, the Pirates jump all over him as well.  Reuschel singles, Ray doubles, Orsulak walks to load the bases.  Thompson walks and Reuschel scores, Thompson bounces out to Durham and Ray scores to make it 9-0.
In the 6th the Cubs finally get on the board Hatcher pinch hits for Frazier and is walked . Dernier singles, Matthews singles scoring Hatcher.  Durham singles and that scores Durham to make it 9-2.  In the bottom half Reuschel hits Fontenot fastball over the leftfield wall for a 2 run homer and it is now 11-2.

In the 7th the Pirates go to work again.  Brown singles, Morrison singles brown heads to 3rd.  Khalifa hits a SACFLY to center and Brown scores to make it 12-2.  Then in the 8th the PIrates make it 14-2.  Ray singles and steals 2nd, Kemp walks, Thompson singles and Ray scores, Brown follows with a double scoring Kemp.

The Cubs walked off the field looking disheveled.  They pitched like a little league team and and the outfielders looked like a track team.  They had no answer for their play and it showed on their faces.

The Final Score 14-2 Pirates
