May 3, 1985 Game 270: Mets (11-8) at Reds (14-7)

It would be a long one at Riverfront today as the starters would fail at getting people out.  Today would have a barrage of hits and one team would take advantage of those hits.  It would be Mario Soto who would be looking for his 6th win and Ed Lynch looking for his 3rd.  I expected great things from Soto but the Mets had different plans for him.

Each team would get a run in the 1st.  The Mets got theirs when Dykstra lead off the game with a single and stole 2nd.  Backman drops down a bunt and Dykstra moves over to 3rd.  Carter then singles him home for 1-0 Mets lead.  But  the Reds get it back when Davis leads off with his 5th homer of the season and it is now tied at 1.

In the 3rd Strawberry hits a 3 run homerun off of Soto to give the Mets a 4-1 lead.  In the 5th the Mets make it 6-1 when with the bases loaded and 2 outs Knight comes up with a clutch hit that would score 2 and that would end Soto's day.  The Reds mount their comeback in the bottom half of the inning.  Davis singles with the bases load scoring Oester.  Rose then delivers a double that would score Diaz and Robinson.  Parker would then hit a deep SACFLy to right that would score Davis and it is now a 6-5 ballgame.

In the 6th the Mets break it open and never look back.  Dykstra walks and Backman bounces into a 4-6 FC.  Heep singles and BAckman advances to 3rd.  Carter then singles to left and Backman scores.  Strawberry singles and Heep scores.  Foster's is safe at 1st on an E1 allowing Carter to score.  Knight then singles allowing Strawberry to score. The Mets now lead 10-5.  In the 8th the Mets add 2 more on Fosters 6th homerun of the year and this time it is a 2 run shot and a 12-5 Mets lead.

The Final Score 12-5 Mets
