May 4, 1985 Game 283: Mets (12-8) at Reds (14-8)

There were 16,634 screaming Reds fans at Riverfront today as the Reds took on the Mets.  The Reds sent out Tom Browning and the Mets sent out Sid Fernandez.  It would be the tale of one team beating up on other despite what the score said.

The Mets touched Browning for 2 in the 2nd.  Foster took a Browning slider and poked into the leftfield seats for his 7th homer of the season, this one was 2 run homer and it is 2-0 Mets.  That silenced the crowd a bit as the Mets were starting to pick up some momentum.

In the 3rd, with Fernandez on 2nd Carter rips a 2-out single to make it 3-0.  Fernandez is costing along as he has 5 strikeouts through the first 3 innings.  In the 6th Heep doubles and holds at 3rd on Carters single.  Strawberry steps up a delivers a single to score Heep and the Mets are up 4-0.  It looked like the Reds would mount a comeback when they would get back to back homers by Esasky and Concepcion in the bottom of the 6th, but Fernandez was able to shut them down and the end of 6 it is 4-2 Mets.

In the 9th the Mets would add to to their lead.  Bowa pinch hits for Fernandez and draws a walk he would later score on Heeps 1-out single to make it 5-2.  Roger McDowell would come in and pitch the 9th and pick up his 1st save.

The Final Score 5-2 Mets
