May 4, 1985 Game 289: Giants (9-12) at Cardinals (14-7)

There was a capacity crowd of 41,410 at Busch Stadium today as the Cardinals take on the Giants.  The Giants are not the most exciting team to watch but lets see what the speedy Cardinals will do today.  They like run early and often.  Whitey Herzog sends Bob Forsch out to face Atlee Hammaker who has pitched great this season but receives no run support.

The Giants getone right away and it looked like the game was going to get out of hand in the 1st but Forsch gets it under control.  After a walk to Roenicke and a double by Trillo to start the game.  Brown hits a SACFLY to left and Roenicke scores to make it 1-0 Giants lead.  Forsch would retire the next two batters to get out of the inning.

The Cardinals quickly strike back in the 2nd.  McGee triples into the left center gap.  Pendleton steps and singles him home to tie the game at 1.  The Cardinals take the lead in the 5th on Colemans SACFLY to left that scores Porter and give the Cardinals a 2-1 lead.

The game was rolling alonf and Forsch was getting some great defense until the 8th.  Deer pinch hits for Hammaker and hits a solo homer (1st) to tie it 2 and that would end Forsch's day.  In the 9th Leonard gives the Giants a 3-2 lead with a solo homer (3rd) off of Daley.  In the Botom of the 9th the Giants bring in Mark Davis to close this one out.  But he puts runners on 1st and 2nd, Herr steps up and delivers a single that scores the Speedy Coleman and its tied at 3.

The game would stay that way until the 11th when Coleman powers one over the wall for his 1st homer of the season and gives the Cardinals a 4-3 win.

The Final Score 4-3 Cardinals
