May 5, 1985: Game 294: Padres (13-9) at Cubs (11-10)

It was a beautiful day at Wrigley Field today and the Cubs and the Padres would put on a pitching clinic and the Padres would show young fans how not to play defense as they would commit 5 errors on the day.  Rick Sutcliffe get the start for the Cubs and Lamarr Hoyt for the Padres.

Sutcliffe was tough right out the gate and the Padres could do nothing against him he had control of off all his pitches and was able to keep the Padres hitters off balance.

Hoyt was locked in from the get go as well and the defense was making things tough for him but he fought through it like the seasoned veteran that he his.

In the 7th the Cubs finally bust through.  Dunston and Sutcliffe single and Dernier drops down a sac bunt and both runners move up.  Sandberg then hits a single scoring both runners and it is now 2-1 Cubs.  The Padres get a run in the 8th, when Flannery and Garvey single putting runners at 1st and 2nd.  McReynolds singles scoring Flannery they looked like they would get some more but Lee Smith is brought in a gets a big strikeout and get the next hitter to ground out to short.  Smith would close out the 9th to preserve the win.

The Final Score 2-1
