May 5, 1985 Game 296: Mets (13-8) at Reds (14-9)

It's a beautiful day at the ballpark today.  The Reds are sending Jay Tibbs to face Dwight Gooden who has been so good this season it is scary.  The defense took the day off and Gooden was not happy about it.  He would have several conversations with his outfielders.

In the 2nd inning the Mets would take the lead.  Dykstra would hit a flyball with the bases loaded into the left center gap and it would hit off of Davis glove and that would allow Wilson to score.  Backman would bounce into a 4-6-3 doubleplay allow Santana to score and the Mets have a 2-0 lead.  In the 5th with runners on 1st & 3rd, Strawberry doubles scoring Heep.  Wilson then bounces into a 4-3 FC and Carter scores,  Santana singles scoring Strawberry and the Mets now lead 5-0.

In the bottom of the 5th the Pirates strike back.  Milner bounces into a 3-6 FC with runners on 1st and 3rd allowing Diaz to score.  Parker then singles scoring Milner making the score 5-2.  In the 6th the Mets make it 6-2 when Strawberry doubles scoring Backman.  The Reds get a couple back in the bottom of the inning.  Diaz grounds to short and Santana throws it away and Oester who was on 2nd scores.  Tibbs bounces to short for a 6-3 FC allowing Concepcion scores.  Milner then follows with a 2 run homer to tie the game at 6.

In the 8th the Mets take the lead on Carters 2 run homer and the score is now 8-6 Mets.  In the bottom of the 9th and Davis hits a 2 run homer to tie the game at 8 and we are headed to extra innings.   In the 10th Heep launches a 2 run homer giving the Mets a 10-8 lead and they would hold on to the win.

The Final Score 10-8 Mets
