May 11, 1985 Game 356: Phillies (11-15) at Mets (16-9)

The red hot Mets are taking on the Phillies at Shea Stadium today and it would be filled to Capacity as Dwight Gooden would take on Steve Carlton.  Both starters were very good today but the bullpens would fail them.

In the 1st the Phillies get a early run.  They have runners at 2nd and 3rd, Virgil singles and Hayes scores to make it 1-0.  The Mets tie it up in the 3rd.  Heep hits a bases loaded SACFLY to center and Gooden scores.

In the 4th Virgil hits a solo homer to give the Phillies a 2-1 lead.  The Mets take the lead in the bottom half of the inning when with the bases loaded Chapman rips a double that will score Santana and Gooden to give the Mets a 3-2 lead.  THe Score would stay that way until the 9th.

The Phillies look they took control of this game in the 9th.  With runners at 1st and 2nd Jeltz hits a grounder to Backman deep in the hole and BAck fields hit but throws it away scoring Wilson and Jeltz advances to 2nd.  Samuel singles scoring Gross and Jeltz to give the Phillies a 5-3 lead.

The Phillies bring in Kent Tekulve to close this one out but the Mets have other ideas.  Hurdle draws a bases loaded walk scoring Heep.  Christensen  draws a bases loaded walk to score Carter.  A passed ball by Virgil allows Johnson to score and give the Mets a 6-5 win.

The Final Score 6-5 Mets
