Right fielder Tony Gwynn had 3 base hits at JACK MURPHY STADIUM as the San Diego Padres beat the Philadelphia Phillies 3 to 2. 

Andy Hawkins(5-7) pitched well for San Diego in their victory. He allowed 7 hits and no walks in 8 innings. The Philadelphia batters didn't put up a fight in the 9th. 

Hawkins was helped out by Goose Gossage who recorded his 11th save. Don Carman(2-1) suffered the loss in relief. He allowed 2 runs and 2 hits in 1 and 1/3 innings.
