In a close game the Houston Astros got by the San Francisco Giants by the score of 8 to 6. 

Obviously without his best stuff, Joe Niekro(3-10) still hung on to pick up the win. He gave up 6 runs, 14 hits and 1 walk in 6 and 1/3 innings. Niekro racked up 9 strikeouts. San Francisco had 16 hits in the game while Houston had 13, but Houston had the more timely hits. 

Dave Smith recorded his 15th save. Jim Gott(6-4) was hit with the loss. He allowed Houston 6 runs in 5 and 1/3 innings of work. Wth the win Houston now has a record of 35-37. With the loss, the San Francisco ballclub's record is 30-42.
