July 5, 1985: Twins (35-43) at Yankees (41-36)

49,140 fans watched an exciting game at YANKEE STADIUM. The New York Yankees topped the Minnesota Twins by the slimmest of margins, 7 to 6. 

New York erupted with the game winning runs in the 8th inning with 2 runs on 5 base hits. Ron Hassey led off and he delivered a one-base hit. Mike Pagliarulo followed next and he laced a base-hit. Bobby Meacham then laid down a sacrifice bunt. Ken Griffey was up next and he slapped a one-base hit which was good for two runs. Minnesota made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across. 

Bob Shirley(5-2) allowed no runs in 1 inning, and picked up the victory. Dave Righetti earned his 16th save. Frank Viola(7-10) was the losing pitcher. 

"We didn't get the key hits when we needed them" Ray Miller said. "We did what we could, we just didn't pull out the win. What can you say?"
