Dennis Eckersley pitched 8 strong innings at WRIGLEY FIELD as the Chicago Cubs beat the San Diego Padres 4 to 1. 

San Diego was unable to climb back into it after Chicago went ahead for good in the bottom of the 5th inning scoring one runner. Chicago banged out 7 hits on the afternoon. 

Eckersley(12-4) got the win allowing 1 run in 8 innings. Lee Smith earned the save, his 23rd. Lamarr Hoyt(9-8) absorbed the loss. With this win, Chicago has a 48-33 record. They have been 7-3 lately. With the loss, the San Diego ballclub's record is 50-34.
