The game was deadlocked at 1 after nine full innings. Finally, Pittsburgh prevailed in the 10th inning. Joe Orsulak singled. After an out was recorded, Jason Thompson stepped up to the plate and he drew a walk. After another out, Tony Pena then doubled scoring the run. Pittsburgh rapped out 8 hits for the night.

Reuschel(12-4) picked up the complete game victory, allowing 1 run. The loss was charged to Fernando Valenzuela(9-8). 'Reuschel gave us exactly what we needed tonight.' Chuck Tanner said. 'When he threw the fastball he threw it for strikes. They were really fooled by his change. Most of the time he had them chasing it.'
