Don Mattingly went yard and had 4 RBI as the New York Yankees defeated the lifeless Cleveland Indians by a score of 8 to 5 at MUNICIPAL STADIUM. 

Ron Guidry(17-5) pitched well enough to earn the win. He went 7 innings surrendering 11 hits and no walks. Dave Righetti was perfect in relief and gained credit for his 23rd save. 

The losing pitcher was Don Schulze(5-13). He surrendered 9 hits and no walks in 5 and 2/3 innings.
