34,841 fans were treated to a fine game at SHEA STADIUM as only one run separated the combatants at game's end. The New York Mets won by the slimmest of margins, 2 to 1.

New York won the game with a run in the 8th inning. Darryl Strawberry drew a walk. George Foster was next to bat, but he was a strikeout victim. Ray Knight then tripled scoring the run. Ron Darling(14-9) got relief help from Jesse Orosco who was excellent in relief and gained credit for his 12th save.

The losing pitcher was Larry Andersen(2-2) in relief. 'I just wanted to give my team a chance to win.' said Darling, 'I got burned on a couple of pitches. But we won the game, and that's all that matters.'
