Ken Phelps homered and had 2 RBI as the Seattle Mariners bested the Minnesota Twins 9 to 8 at METRODOME. 

In the 5th inning Seattle scored 4 runs with the help of 3 hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Ivan Calderon who quieted the crowd when he tripled with all three runners coming home. Seattle finished with 12 hits in the victory. 

Matt Young(12-9) got credit for the victory, pitching 7 innings and allowing 5 runs. Edwin Nunez earned his 18th save. Bert Blyleven(13-10) was hit with the loss. He got hit hard, allowing 11 hits and 4 walks in 5 and 1/3 innings. 

The Seattle ballclub's record now stands at 59-57. With the loss, Minnesota has a record of 3-7 lately, 47-68 overall.
