42,310 fans watched an exciting game at Colt Stadium. The St. Louis Cardinals topped the Houston Astros by the slimmest of margins, 5 to 4. 

St. Louis wasted no time and took the lead in the first inning as they scored 4 runs on 5 base hits. The biggest moment was provided by Andy Van Slyke who quieted the crowd when he launched a three-run homer. Houston tried unsuccessfully to come back in the 9th. 

The win was credited to Joaquin Andujar(11-11) who went 8 innings allowing 4 runs. Jeff Lahti preserved the game for Andujar, recording his his 20th save. Mike Scott(6-13) was charged with the loss.
