August 26, 1985: Padres (68-59) at Phillies (52-73)

First baseman Steve Garvey had 5 hits as the San Diego Padres bested the Philadelphia Phillies in 15 innings 5 to 2 at Shibe Park. 

The game was deadlocked at 2 after nine full innings. San Diego won it in the 15th inning. After an out was recorded, Al Bumbry began the San Diego spurt when he doubled. One out later, Tony Gwynn came to bat and delivered a single plating a run. Garvey then laced a base-hit. Carmelo Martinez was up next and he drew a walk to load the bases. Graig Nettles came up to bat and drew a walk plating another run. Kevin McReynolds added to the outburst and stroked a one-base hit scoring the final run of the inning. San Diego bats were very productive in the 15th inning which saw them plate 3 runs on 4 hits. San Diego had 21 hits for the night while Philadelphia had 11. 

The winning pitcher was Mark Thurmond(9-4) who allowed no runs in 5 innings. Thurmond got help from Goose Gossage who was credited with his 26th save. Larry Andersen(3-3) was given the loss in relief. By giving up 3 runs in 1 inning his ERA increased from 4.40 to 4.89.
