Phil Niekro went 9 strong innings as the New York Yankees beat the California Angels in 13 innings by a score of 2 to 1. 

The score was knotted at 1 after nine innings. New York came out the victor in the 13th inning. Don Mattingly drew a walk. Dave Winfield stepped into the batter's box and he delivered a single. Two outs later Mike Pagliarulo came up and he drew a walk to load the bases. Butch Wynegar followed and he laced a single resulting in a mighty exciting win for New York and the 48,789 home town fans in attendance. New York had 12 hits for the night while California had 8. 

Bob Shirley(8-2) allowed no runs in 4 innings, and picked up the victory. Stu Cliburn(4-2) absorbed the loss in relief. He gave up 3 hits and 2 walks in 2 and 2/3 innings.
