The Chicago Cubs defeated the woeful Atlanta Braves by a score of 8 to 5 at WRIGLEY FIELD. 

Chicago scored 5 runs in the decisive 7th inning when they had 5 base hits. They would prove to be the difference in the contest. Chicago rapped out 11 hits for the afternoon. 

Ray Fontenot(7-13) went 8 innings allowing 5 runs for the win. Lee Smith earned his 33rd save. Rick Mahler(10-13) was charged with the loss. He surrendered 8 hits and 7 walks in 6 and 1/3 innings.
