The Chicago Cubs nipped the New York Mets 3 to 2 at SHEA STADIUM in a hard fought contest. 

Dennis Eckersley(19-9) pitched a solid game. He allowed only 5 hits and 2 walks in 8 and 1/3 innings. The game was a scoreless duel until the 7th inning. Lee Smith gained credit for his 36th save. 

Ron Darling(15-14) was given the loss. He pitched 6 innings and surrendered 5 hits and 3 walks.
