Gary Carter smacked 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI and Dwight Gooden delivered 9 solid innings as the indomitable New York Mets beat the Pittsburgh Pirates by a score of 5 to 1. 

The New York fans enjoyed the offense provided by Carter. He smashed a bases-empty bomb in the 4th inning and bombed a two-run dinger in the 7th inning. New York had 10 hits for the afternoon. 

Gooden(19-7) allowed 1 run on the game. The loss was charged to Rick Rhoden(11-15). He gave up 10 hits and 1 walk in 7 innings.
