April 10, 1985 Game 16: Yankees at Red Sox

It was a packed crowd at Fenway Park today as the Red Sox were looking to open the season at 2-0. They man handles the Yankees in the first game, however, today was a different game entirely. The Red Sox were hoping that Bruce Hurst would quiet the Yankee bats and the Yankees were ending Ed Whitson to the hill. The Red Sox would pound Whitson early. In the bottom of the 1st Wade Boggs leads off with Double, followed by a Dwight Evans Walk that would make first and second and Jim Rice would Single scoring Boggs, Evans would hold at third. Easler and Armas would lineout and strike out. Bill Buckner would walk loading the bases for Rich Gedman, he would hit a single scoring Evans and giving the Red Sox a 2-0 lead Whitson would get Marty Barrett to lineout to Bobby Meachem to end the inning. The Yankees would answer back in the 2nd. Ken Griffey would Double to lead off, Butch Wynegar would Single and Griffey would hold at 3rd. Bobby Meachem would hit one to deep right scoring Griffey on the SACFLY. Making the score 2-1 Red Sox. The Yankees would tie the game in the 3rd when Don Mattingly would out one just inside the Pesky Pole for a solo Home Run. At the end of 3 the score is tied at 2. The Red Sox would get 2 in the 4th. Marty Barrett would open the frame with a lead off Single, followed by a Walk to Jackie Guiterrez. After a Boggs lineout Dwight Evans would Single scoring Barrett. Jim Rice would Walk loading the bases for Mike Easler who would Single scoring Guiterrez. Whitson was then able to get Tony Armas to bounce into a 5-4-3 double play to end the inning. That would be all the scoring the Red Sox would get as Whitson would be able to get some outs when he needed them. At the end of the 4th the score was 4-2 Red Sox It was an ugly outing for Whitson as he would leave the game having pitched 7 innings giving up 4 runs on 12 hits, walking 4 and striking out 5. The Yankees would tie the score in the 5th when Don Baylor would take a Bruce Hurst pitch and knock it out of the park for a 2-Run Homer that would score Dave Winfield. They would take the lead for good in the 6th thanks to a Butch Wynegar Double and a 2-out Single by Billy Sample that would score Wynegar. Making the score 5-4 Yankees. They would get 2 more in the 8th. With the bases loaded Wille Randolph is hit in the leg with by a Steve Crawford fastball forcing in Dale Berra. Next up Don Mattingly would Single scoring Wynegar. The big blow would come in the 9th when the Yanks would put 9 runs on the board, highlighted by a Don Mattingly 3-Run shot off of Bob Ojeda.
