The Twins and the Angels were ready to battle it out today as they hoped not to go extra innings. Starting for the Twins was Mike Smithson and Kirk McCaskill for the Angels. Yesterday the two teams went 12 innings and they were hoping not repeat it.
The Angels would get to Smithson early by putting 1 on the board in the 1st inning. Rod Carew would lead off with a Single and Reggie Jackson would Triple him home. Smithson would cruise the rest of the game and would only give up 3 more hits, while striking out 7.
It was a different story for McCaskill and he never seemed to find his groove. The Twins would get 2 in the 3rd thanks to 4 McCaskill walks and and a doubleplay. The Twins would take a 2-1 lead. They would get 1 more in the 4th When Tom Brunansky would Double, then a Gary Gaetti would Single him over to 3rd. Tim Teufel would then hit a deep fly ball to left that would score Brunansky and the Twins would up 3-1. A Mickey Hatcher Homer in the 4th would give the Twins a 4-1 lead. With runners on 1st and 3rd in the 6th a Doug Decinces error would score Brunansky and the wins would lead 5-1.
McCaskill would hit the showers after the 7th and Rafael Lugo would take over and the Twins would pound him in the 9th. Roy Smalley would smack a 2-run Double scoring Hatcher and Hrbek. Tom Brunansky would then pop a 2-run homer to put the Twins up 9-1. Smithson would return in the 9th and put the Angels down quickly.
