April 14, 1985 Game 65: Cardinals (2-2) at Pirates (3-1)

In the final game of this 3 game set both teams were set to take the series as they split the first two games . The Cardinals have been less than impressive through the first 4 games and the Pirates have played well. Joaquin Andujar would go up against Rick Rhoden.

The Cardinals would get on the board in the 2nd when they would tag Rhoden for 5 runs. Van Slyke would get things going when he split the outfielders and end up with a double that would score Clark. Andujar would bounce into a 3-1 FC and that would score Van Slyke. Herr would keep the scoring going when he would single to right scoring Porter and Smith. Finally Pendelton would single scoring Herr and its 5-0 Cardinals. The Cardinals weren't done as they would get a run in the when Khalifa would bobble a Smith gounder and Coleman would race home to make it 6 to 0.

Rhoden would settle in for the nest 4 innings and Andujar was in rare form as the Pirates were unable to sustain an attack. In the 7th Van Slyke would single to right and that would score the speedy Coleman to make it 7-0. Rhoden was able to get out of the inning but the Cards were up big. In the 8th Jim Winn would replace Rhoden and the Cardinals didn't miss a beat. They would get another one as Herr smack a 3-1 pitch into the leftfield stands and the Cardinals are up 8-0.

Andujar closed this one out with a 1-2-3 9th to get the shutout. He only gave up 4 hits and 2 BB to go with 4 k's. Rhoden was hit hard as he gave 7 runs on 12 hits and 4 BB.

After the game Chuck Tanner was very upset with his team. He balsted his team saying "How do we expect to win games when we can't pitch and we can't hit."
