April 16, 1985 Game 81: Astros (1-6) at Dodgers (5-2)

Starting today for the Astros would be Bob Knepper who was looking to rebound from his first start where he could not get out of the 1st inning. Bob Welch would toe the rubber for the Dodgers and he would look to try to keep the Dodgers going in their hot start.

In the 1st Russell would single for the Dodgers and would score on a Guerrero double to make it 1-0. In the 5th the Dodgers would add to their lead. Anderson would lead off with a single and a welch single would send him to 3rd. A Knepper wild pitch would score Anderson and Welch would advance to 2nd to make 2-0. Russell would come up and slap a single to left and Welch would hold at 3rd. Marshall would hit a SACFLY to Bass scoring Welch and now it is 3-0. Guerrero would then step up and hit a Knepper fastball into the leftfield seats for a 2 run homer to make it 5-0.

In the 7th Astros would start to chip away at the Dodgers lead. Knepper would lead off with a single, then a Thon 2 run homer would make it 5-2. With 1 out Walling would double, Cruz would popout to Duncan and then Mumphrey would put one in the right center alley for a triple and that would score Walling to make it 5-3.

In the 8th the Dodger defense would commit 3 errors and that would be their undoing as the Astros would take the lead. Bailey would get on via a Welch error, Doran singles and Bailey holds at 2nd. Davis would reach 1st on a Duncan error and now the bases are loaded. Thon would smoke one to Duncan and he would committ another error and that would score Bailey, Cruz would then walk and that would force home Davis to make it 5-5. Mumphrey would hit a bloop single to left that was just out the reach of Anderson's glove, Thon would score and that would give the Astros a 6-5 lead. Smith would come in a close out the 9th for his 2nd save.
