April 17, 1985 Game 94: Mets (3-4) at Pirates (5-2)

The Mets have lost the first two of this series and are looking to take the rubber match.  The Pirates are red hot right now and look to continue their dominance.  Davey Johnson would send Sid Fernandez out to quell the Pirate offense and Chuck Tanner would send Larry McWilliams to the mound to keep the Pirates afloat.

The Mets would strike first as they would get 2 in the 2nd.  Foster would get a 2-out single and Knight would follow with a 2 run Home Run on a McWilliams hanging curve and its 2-0 Mets.  The Pirates would answer back with some runs of their own. Wynne would lead off with a single, Lezcano singles and Khalifa draws a walk to load the bases. McWilliams hits a SACFLY to Wilson and that scores Wynne.  Morrison singles and that scores Lezcano,  Brown would follow with a double and that would Khalifa and the Pirates take the lead 3-2.

The Pirates would break the game open in the 5th as Fernandez would leave a few to many pitches up in the strikezone.  Lezcano and Khalifa would draw 1-out walks.  Ray would single and that would score Lezcano.  Fernandez would try to over power Morrison would would crush a fastball for a 3 run homer and it is now 7-2 Pirates.

The Mets would not go quietly however.  In the 6th Chapman and Carter would draw walks, Strawberry would bounce into a 6-4 FC and Chapman advances to 3rd.  Foster hits a hard one to Ray who can't find the handle and commits the error and allows Chapman to score and now its 7-3 Pirates

The Mets woiuld get 2 more in the 7th and send McWilliams to the clubhouse.  Bowa would deliver a pinch hit single, Wilson walks, Hernandez doubles and that scores Bowa.  Carter would then hit a deep SACFLY to Lezcano and that score Wilson to make it 7-5 Pirates.  THe Mets would not be able to cause anymore damage and the Pirates would sweep them.
