April 18, 1985 Game 101: Dodgers (6-3) at Padres (3-4)

The Dodgers are rolling and they look to continue to the trend early in the season. They would send Fernando Valenzuela to the hill and The Padres would send Mark Thurmond to the mound.

The Padres would take the early lead in the 1st Valenzuela issues a lead off walk to Flannery and Gwynn follows it with a 2 run homer his 3rd of the year and it is 2-0 Padres. Garvey grounds out to short and then McReynolds hits his 1st homer of the season and its now 3-0. Valezuezla was visably frustrated as he walked off the mound.

In the 4th the Dodgers would get a run back as Marshall would lead off with a single, Scioscia will double with 1 out and Marshall will hold at 3rd. Thurmond walks Anderson to load the bases. Valenzuela would drop down a squeeze bunt and Garvey would charge make the play and had no play at the plate and threw to Flannery who was covering 1st to get Valenzuela and Marshall scores to make the score 3-1.

In the 7th the Padres would make it 4-1 when Flannery smokes one into the rightfield corner for a triple. Gwynn would hit a SACFLY to right and that would score Flannery.

The Dodgers would try and mount a comeback in the 8th as Thurmond was staring to tire. Maldonado would hit a solo homer his 2nd and Anderson would also hit a solo homer to make it 4-3. Thurmond was able to Madlock to end the inning. Goose Gossage would pitch the 9th to earn his 1st save.
