April 19, 1985 Game 107: Astros (2-7) at Braves (2-6)

These two have stumbled out of the gates and both are trying to find anyway they can to win ballgames.  Today would feature Nolan Ryan a perennial fan favorite vs Rick Mahler.  Brave fans wanted the win but were also hoping to see Ryan blow hitters away with that blazing fastball and his big curveball.  They would get neither of those wishes today.

The Astros would give Ryan an early lead as they score 2 in the 1st.  Puhl leads off the game with a single, Reynolds doubles putting runners at 2nd and 3rd, Walling follows with a double and that would score both runners.  Three batters into the game and the Astros have two runs.  It looked as though they were in for a big night but MAhler settles in and gets the next three batters and at the end of 1 its 2-0 Astros.

The Braves would get 1 back in the 3rd as Washington hits a 1 out single, Ramirez Singles putting runners on 1st and 2nd with 1 out.  Komminsk punches one into left and Washington races around third but Cruz makes a great throw and Washington is out.  Murphy comes through with a single to center and Ramirez scores easily to make it 2-1 Astros.

The Astros make it 3-1 in the 5th when Ashby hits a Mahler slider for a home run his 1st of the season.  The Braves get it back in the 6th when Horner who is hitting a measly .188 hits that Ryan curve for a homer his 1st of the year.

But the offenses would get no more as they were unable to take advantage of pitching mistake. Ryan and Mahler weren't ineffective, it seemed like they were taking a biology exam and hoping to get a C.  Just enough to get by.

The Final Score 3-2 Astros
