This looked it would be one to remember. Dwight Gooden would start for the Mets and Steve Carlton for the Phillies. Both are coming off of great starts and looking for their second win.
The Mets would jump all over Carlton in the 1st. Wilson leads off with a double, Chapman triples and Wilson scores. Hernandez hits a SACFLY to Gross and Chapman scores. Carter and Foster single and Johnson will tag a Carlton pitch for a 3 run homer to make it 5-0.
The Mets would add to Carltons problems in the 3rd. He would walk Hernandez and Carter, Strawberry hits into a 6-3 FC and that advances the runners. An error by Jeltz on a Foster grounder scores Hernandez and Carter advances to 3rd. Johnson hits a SACFLY to center scores Carter and it's 7-0 Mets and that is all for Carlton.
Charlie Hudson takes over for Carlton and he holds the Mets hitless until the 8th. Strawberry singles, Foster singles. Johnson singles and that will score Strawberry, that makes it 8-0 Mets.
Dwight Gooden was throwing BB's today, as he would only give up only 4 hits and strikeout 10. He would increase his scorless inning streak to 27.
Howard Johnson went 2-3 with a HR and 5 RBI.
The Final Score 8-0 Mets
