April 26, 1985 Game 201: Cubs (6-8) at Phillies (7-7)

The Cubs had an offensive explosion at the Vet today.  Every batter had at least 1 hit and 6 batters had 2 or more.  They would finish the game with 16 hits and 10 of those went for extra bases and 4 of those were homeruns.  The leader of this surge was Ryne Sandberg who went 3-5 with a double, a homerun and 3 RBI.  Dennis Eckersley gets the start for the Cubs and he was sharp today.  He would scatter 9 hits and struckout 7 while surrendering 2 runs.

The Cubs start their onslaught in the 3rd with a Matthews 2-out 2 run homer to put them up 2-0.  They will add 2 more in the 4th on a Davis 2-out solo homer and the Cubs lead it 3-0.  In the bottom of the 4th Schmidt breaks his homerless streak with a leadoff shot off Eckersley to make it 3-1.

Eckersley leads off the 5th with a double, Sandberg then rips a 2-out double and Eckersley scores, Matthews singles and Sandberg scores.  Durham then crushes a 2-out 2 run homer to put the Cubs 8-1. 

In the 6th the cubs make it 11-1.  Dernier doubles with 1-out and Sandberg follows with a 2 run homer.  Matthews then walks and Lopes singles,  Cey pokes a 2-out single and Matthews comes around to score.  In the 7th the Phillies get a run.  Jeltz leads off with a single and Aguayo triples scoring Jeltz and its now 11-2.

The Cubs add one morein the 8th, Lopes gets on due to an error on Anderson,  Durham doubles, Cey dribbles one back to the the mound and Anderson throws it away for an error and Lopes scores and its now 12-2.  Eckersley closes out the 9th for the complete game.
