April 27, 1985 Game 206: Braves (6-10) at Astros (6-11)

Its a battle of cellar dwellers at the Astrodome today. The Braves have a half game lead on the Astros and are looking to stay out of the bottom.  They will send Rick Mahler to the mound and he has been a victim of poor run support.  The Astros send Mike Scott to toe the rubber in hopes of silencing the Braves week offense and this was a wild one.

The Braves start things off with a bang and Washington and Ramirez lead off the game with back to back homers off of Scott to give them a 2-0 lead. The Astros get 1 back 1 the 2nd on a Mumphrey solo shot off of Mahler and its now 2-1 Braves.  It would stay that way until the 5th.

The Astros take a 4-2 lead Doran singles with 2 outs, Bass doubles and Walling walks to load the bases.  Cruz singles scoring Doran and Bass, Mumphrey singles scoring Walling.  The Astros add to their lead in th 7th.  Bass singles, Walling hits one in the hole between 1st and 2nd  and Oberkfell's only play is at 1st and Bass is now at 2nd.  Cruz singles scoring Bass, Mumphrey singles advancing Cruz to 3rd.  Garner hits a SACFLY to Center and Cruz scores easily to make it 6-2 Astros.

The Braves get those 2 runs back in the 8th on a Chambliss 2 run homer and that ends Scotts night.  Frank DiPino comes in and gets the Astros put of the inning before more damage can be done and the score is now 6-4.

Dave Smith comes on in the 9th to shut the door, but as usual he makes it an adventure and cannot get the save.  Komminsk walks, Murphy singles, Horner doubles scoring Komminsk,  Chambliss then steps in and crushes a 3 run homer off of Smith to give the Braves and 8-6 lead.  The Braves send their closer Bruce Sutter in and he doesn't fair much better.  He gives up a single to Walling, Cruz singles, Garner is on thanks to a error by Horner scores Walling and Cruz heads to 3rd.  Ashby then hits a SACFLY to center scoring Cruz and it is now tied up at 8.

In the 10th the Astros bring Jeff Heathcock and Murphy greets him with a solo shot to put the Braves back on top.  Horner triples with 1-out and Chambliss hits deep fly to right scoring Horner and the Braves have a 10-8.  The Braves bring in Len Barker to finish this one out and the starter get the Astros 1-2-3 to end the game.

The Final Score 10-8 Braves
