April 30, 1985 Game 241: Astros (7-12) at Mets (9-8)

Its a gorgeous day at Shea Stadium today and Met fans will watch the dominant Dwight Gooden take on Joe Niekro who has been everything except good.

In the 3rd Johnson singles, Heep advances to 2nd due to an error on Mumphrey, Strawberry hits a deep fly to center and Johnson scores to make it 1-0.  The Mets add to their lead in the 4th.  Dykstra hits a slow roller to second and Doran throws it away and Dykstra heads to 2nd.  Gooden then sigles followed by a Backman single and Dykstra scores.  Johnson singles scoring Gooden and the Mets have a 3-0 lead.

In the 5th Foster hits his 4th homerun of the season to make 4-0 Mets.  Gooden has been dominating the Astros all game but leaves a fastball up in the strikezone and Ashby tattoos it for a homerun, his 2nd of the year and its now 4-1 Mets.  In the bottom of the 8th the mets add a insurance run.  Heep singles with 1-out, Strawberry singles with 2-outs,  Foster then singles scoring Heep and it is now 5-1 Mets.  In the 9th The Astros show that Gooden is a mere mortal as they launch their comeback.  Bass doubles, Walling doubles and bass scores, Cruz singles and then Mumphrey singles scoring Walling. That will send Gooden to the shower and Orosco will try and finish the game.  Orosco gets the final 3 outs and picks up his 4th save.
