May 1, 1985 Game 256: Expos (9-11) at Phillies (8-11)

It was an ugly one at the Vet today as the Phillies played the Expos.  Hits were hard to come by early in the game.  But what the pitchers lacked giving up hits they more than made up for in walks.  Kevin Gross was handed the ball for the Phillies and Joe Hesketh for the Expos.

Gross would walk 8 through the first 5 innings and he would finally pay for those walks in the 5th when Brooks takes a Gross curveball and hits it into the leftfield seats for a grandslam and the Expos are up 4-0.  The Phillies get one back in the bottom of the 5th Schmidt, Schu and Virgil are all walked by Hesketh.  The only run the Phillies can get is on a passed ball by Butera that allows Schmidt to score and the is 4-1 Expos.

The Phillies make it 4-2 when Schmidt hits his 3rd homer in the 6th off of Hesketh.  The Expos get that run back in the 8th.  Wallach walks, Winninghm singles and Wallach advances to 3rd.  Butera then laces a 1-out single that scores and it now 5-2 Expos.

There were a total of 14 walks in this game.  I hate ugly baseball

The Final Score 5-2 Expos
