May 8, 1985 Game 321: Cardinals (17-8) at Dodgers (15-12)

For the second straight day the Cardinals take on a team from the West that is trying to take over 1st place.  Yesterday they played the Padres and won 2-1.  Today they take on the Dodgers and beating them was easier said then done.  Danny Cox would take on Rick Honeycutt.  Neither starter was overly impressive today.

The Dodgers jump out ahead in the 1st when Marshall singles with runners on 1st and 2nd scoring Duncan.  At the end of 1 the Dodgers have a 1-0 lead.  THe Dodgers add 2 more in the 3rd hits a single and Van Slyke throws it away trying to cut down Madlock who was heading to 3rd and Guerrero ends up on 3rd and Madlock scores.  Marshall then follows with a single scoring Guerrero and it is a 3-0 dodgers lead.

The Cardinals come charging back in the 5th.  Pendleton is on 2nd and Nieto singhles scoring him.  Smith doubles scoring Nieto from 1st.  Coleman singles scoring Smith, Van Slyke triples scoring Coleman.  Herr then smacks a triple of his own and Van Slyke scores.  Clark caps off the scoring by singling Herr home. The Score in now 6-3 Cardinals.  

The Cardinals add to their lead in the 8th.  Smith pokes a 2-out single scoring Clark to make it a 7-3 Cardinals lead.  But The Dodgers come storming back in the bottom of xthe 8th.  Guerrero is on 2nd and Marshall doubles scoring him and after Brock is issued a walk  Landreaux singles scoring Marshall.  Maldonado pinch hits and delivers a triple scoring both Bro,ck and Landreaux to tie the game at 7.  But in the 9th Coleman leads off with a walk and then steals 2nd.  DeJesus steps in as Herr went down with an injury and delivers a single scoring the speedy Coleman and gives the Cardinals an 8-7 lead.  Jeff Lahti tries to make it interesting in the 9th by walking 2 of the 5 batters he faced but he gets out of it to pick up his 5th save.
